We’re back! The next Mark Gatiss Appreciation Society watchalong will be this coming Saturday at 2 PM US Central/8 PM UK time. We’ll be watching Operation Mincemeat, about a WWII deception operation. The movie has been called “an engaging and well-acted wartime drama”.
Mark Gatiss plays Ivor Montagu, who in real life was a filmmaker, screenwriter, Communist, and founder of the International Table Tennis Federation. He was thought to be a spy, according to Wikipedia, because his “passionate support of international ping-pong seemed so eccentric to MI5 that they assumed it had to be a cover for something else.”
I’m told there’s not much Mark in this movie, but based on the few pictures I grabbed, what there is, is choice. And there’s Colin Firth to make up for it.

This is one of the sillier things I’ve done. I have now created the only fanfic for Locked Down on AO3. After the @markgatissappreciationsociety viewing of the film, we decided that Donald (MG’s character) needed more of a happy ending. (Mainly because it was more fun talking about that than watching the movie.) So here’s a new career and a new partner for him. Big thanks to @daleslight for providing a lot of inspiration and good ideas, and to the MGAS for a wonderful watchalong.

Our last viewing of the annus horribilis that was 2022 will be A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story tomorrow, December 30, at 2:30 US Central time, 8:30 UK time. Mark plays Marley and wrote the adaptation. Let's end the year with shared festivity and a hope for positive change.

Late notice, but tomorrow! Saturday November 19! We will be watching spies and assassins.
I need dressed-up Brits telling me about James Bond, so we're watching Premium Bond with Mark Gatiss and Matthew Sweet. With a chaser of Cleaning Up, where Mark kills people.
2 PM Central US time, 8 PM UK, please message for URL if you need it.

Let's plan ahead! You can bet he ^ would.
The MGAS will be watching Coalition (2015) not tomorrow but next Saturday, November 5, at 3 PM Central US time (which I think is 8 PM UK time because there's a time zone change by then).
Mark Gatiss plays Peter Mandelson, an inspiration for his characterization of Mycroft Holmes.

Dear friends,
This week is the two-year anniversary of the Mark Gatiss Appreciation Society. (First post here.)
To celebrate, we will be watching (once again) The Quatermass Experiment (2005), as it was the first thing we watched together. Join me, the yarn boys, and whoever else can show up on short notice for a virtual celebration at 2 PM Central US time/ 8 PM UK time tomorrow (Saturday, January 14). We'll drink every time Mark touches his nose, so be sure to have something you can swallow a LOT of with you.

Revisiting the first official MGAS watchalong, from Feb 2021... it’s true, he was adorable in it. (Although not in it enough.)
I am still the only person to have ever written Donald fanfic. He needed more to happen in his life.

Friends! Due to my getting sick, there will be no MGAS watchalong tomorrow. But it meant that I knew what film to pick.
In acknowledgment that the pandemic is not over, I will be showing Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen, on Saturday, August 13, at 2 PM US Central time / 8 PM UK time. Mark your calendars now!
That 2009 TV movie stars Bill Paterson as Dr. James Niven, the lead medical officer in Manchester in 1918, fighting the influenza outbreak after the First World War. Mark Gatiss plays Ernest Dunks, who works with Niven. (Warning, there are some gross bits in it, including an autopsy.)
Mark has a mustache and often, although not here, a hat.

MGAS Watchalong Tomorrow!
Tumblr media
I do hope I'm not too late in mentioning this... I'd love to see you all for the last MGAS Watchalong of the year.
It's The Wind in the Willows! Mark plays Ratty, trying to prevent Matt Lucas' Toad from doing ridiculous things. And ... spoiler... there's a sword fight! And boating.
Bring your G&T (or beverage of choice) and join us tomorrow, Saturday, December 17, at 2 PM Central US time (8 PM UK).

Oh, and I forgot to mention -- it's the UK version! Not the truncated US one.

This Saturday, it’s time for another MGAS watchalong!
It’s a 2012 episode of Inspector George Gently, “The Lost Child”, in which Mark plays a 60s suburban dad whose baby is missing. Co-stars Lee Ingleby, who we’ve seen with Mark in Crooked House and The Wind in the Willows.
June 11, 2 PM Central US / 8 PM UK. Message for connection info if needed.

Have you missed us?
Tomorrow, at 10 AM US Central time / 4 PM UK time, the MGAS is watching “The Empty Hearse”, the season 3 opener of Sherlock. Come discuss with us Mycroft’s fashion sense, with a thousand-pound coat for an undercover outfit.
(My apologies for the late notice.)

It’s time. This coming Saturday, the MGAS will be watching P.R.O.B.E.: Zero Imperative, the 1994 film Mark wrote and appeared in. It’s notable mostly for one, being really early work of his, and two, featuring several actors who’d previously played Doctor Who. (This was during the hiatus, when fans weren’t sure the show would ever come back.)
2 PM Central US / 8 PM UK time, message for link if needed.

This coming Saturday, the MGAS will be watching An Adventure in Space and Time. It’s a bit of a cheat, as Mark isn’t really in it (although that’s him on set, dressed up as Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, next to Reece Shearsmith as the Second -- and he’s wearing an actual Pertwee costume jacket!), but he did write it.
It aired in 2013 as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations. (Hard to believe next year will be the 60th!) Mark had been pitching to do something similar since the 40th.
So join us, won’t you? Saturday, August 27, at 2 PM Central US / 8 PM UK time.
